Founded in 2007, The Gym Group was a pioneer of the low-cost gym model and now operates 240+ high quality sites across the UK. Not only is the group leading the way in its field, but the company is also innovating when it comes to inclusivity.

In 2022, The Gym Group launched its inclusive traineeship, a “groundbreaking” scheme designed to create meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities and special needs in the leisure industry. It focuses on helping participants build confidence, develop vocational skills, and secure long-term employment.

The programme’s primary goal is to break down barriers to employment while fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. The group provide tailored support to empower participants, helping them achieve independence, self-esteem, and clear career aspirations, all while working towards a formal qualification to enhance their employability.

We interviewed the architect of the group’s programme, Senior Talent Acquisition & ER Manager, Jennagh Delaney-Harding, to find out more…

Q. What disabilities or needs does your programme focus on, and how do you ensure inclusivity across various types of special needs?

A: The initial programme was aimed specifically at people with Down’s syndrome, inspired by my desire to show my younger brother Oscar, that businesses can, and will, invest in people like him. After the success of the original cohort, we expanded the programme to include individuals with a wider range of needs, including autism, ADHD, physical disabilities, and learning difficulties. Inclusivity is ensured through personalised support plans, adaptive resources, and collaboration with participants to understand their unique challenges. We also work with specialists to ensure everyone feels valued, supported, and included.

Q: Are there any dedicated staff members or specialists who work directly with participants to address their unique challenges?

A: Yes, we are fortunate to have amazing managers across our gyms and head office who provide safe and supportive environments for our trainees. We also partner with Virtual Health & Fitness (VHF), a brilliant training provider that has reworked course material to meet the needs of our participants. Together, they assess individual needs and provide personalised guidance to help participants overcome challenges and develop the skills needed for success.

Q: How do you identify and select candidates for the scheme?

A: We collaborate with national charities, support organisations, and inspirational advocates like Tola, from #raisingkevin, on Instagram, to reach potential candidates. Our selection process is strengths-based, focusing on what each individual can achieve rather than their limitations. Interviews and assessments are conducted in relaxed, inclusive environments to ensure candidates feel comfortable and confident.

Q: What types of skill development or vocational training do participants receive, and how is it tailored to their abilities and career goals?

A: Each participant gets hands-on experience either on the gym floor or at head office, depending on their placement. Supported by our fantastic teams, they gain insight into what it’s like to be part of a professional environment. We focus on essential employability skills such as timekeeping, communication, and professionalism. Participants also complete a formal Active IQ qualification aligned with our values in healthy living and wellbeing. Examples include a Level 1 in Healthy Living or a Level 2 in Group Training. Training is tailored to align with the individual’s career interests and abilities, ensuring achievable and meaningful goals.

Q: How do you work to create a welcoming environment for individuals with special needs?

A: We prioritise empathy and respect in everything we do. Our staff receive disability awareness training, and our onboarding processes are fully inclusive. We’ve also designed our physical spaces to be accessible and actively encourage a culture of openness and support where every contribution is recognised and celebrated.

Q: How do you measure the success of the programme? Are there specific metrics or outcomes you track?

A: In the fitness industry, roles often require specific qualifications, so success isn’t always measured by immediate hires. For us, success is about positively impacting the individual, enhancing the skills of our managers, and improving the confidence and employability of our trainees. If a participant leaves the programme more empowered, capable, and ready to pursue their goals, we consider it a success.

Q: Could you share any success stories or notable achievements from individuals who have completed the programme?

A: One of our standout success stories is a young learner from our Woodgreen gym who has a passion for fitness but initially hesitated to enter the industry due to his autism. With the support of his team, he’s thriving and currently working towards his Level 3 Personal Training qualification. We can’t wait to see him become a fantastic personal trainer and achieve his dreams. He’s been an inspiration to everyone he’s worked with.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in running this traineeship, and how do you address them?

A: One of the biggest challenges is addressing the lack of support people with disabilities often face in education and employment. Many participants need additional guidance to navigate the demands of learning and work. With the support of The Gym Group, VHF, and their personal networks, we help participants celebrate small milestones on their journey to completing the programme and achieving their qualifications.

Q: What are the plans for the future of the inclusive traineeship?

A: We’re committed to continuing the programme and welcoming anyone with a genuine passion for fitness and wellbeing. Our aim is to break down barriers for people with disabilities and SEND, helping them achieve their goals, whatever they may be.

Q: Why are programmes like yours important, and should other businesses follow suit?

A: These programmes are essential for promoting equality and breaking down barriers to employment. They showcase the incredible skills and perspectives that individuals with special needs bring to the workplace. Businesses that embrace inclusivity not only strengthen their teams but also contribute to a fairer society. It’s all about assuming that people can, rather than presuming they can’t.

Q: Have you carried any of this forward into your standard recruitment processes?

A: Yes, our recruitment process includes questions about reasonable adjustments, such as sharing interview questions in advance or allowing candidates to bring a support person. This ethos extends to the workplace, where we continuously consider individual needs. We’re excited about our plans for 2025 and beyond, which will further enhance inclusivity.

Q: Can you tell us anything about these exciting plans?

A: We’re developing online training modules for our teams to support members and colleagues with disabilities. We’re also working on showcasing accessibility at each of our gyms to help prospective members find the right facilities for their needs. Additionally, we’ve introduced accessibility kits for gyms to support members with mobility challenges, and there’s so much more to come!

Q: Is there a final piece of advice you would give to others looking to do something similar in their workplaces?

A: If you can, you should! Everyone deserves the opportunity to work and grow. Creating a safe, supportive space where someone can learn, build confidence, and improve their employability is incredibly rewarding. Engage the right partners, invest in people, and watch how it transforms not only the lives of those involved but also the culture of your organisation. It’s truly a privilege, and you won’t regret it.
