What’s it like studying for your CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning & Development? We ask Sharon Mathew, an L&D Specialist at Commercial Bank International based in Dubai, her views on achieving this prestigious qualification and how it has helped her become more strategic in her role.
What is your career experience in L&D?
With over 14 years of experience in Learning & Development, I have successfully led the design and execution of comprehensive L&D strategies across major banking institutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). My career began in training with a multinational bank, Barclays, and has since expanded to include roles at both conventional and Islamic banks such as National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and Commercial Bank International (CBI). My expertise lies in conducting structured training needs analyses, building competency frameworks, developing tailored learning programmes, and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
What is your current role and explain your responsibilities?
In my current role at CBI, I lead learning initiatives that range from induction sessions, refresher programmes, eLearning programmes to leadership development programmes. I collaborate closely with senior leadership, universities, and professional bodies to deliver cutting-edge learning solutions. Additionally, I oversee UAE Central Bank reporting for L&D, manage budgets, and produce quarterly L&D newsletters.
In my role as a Learning and Development Specialist at CBI, I lead the design and execution of a comprehensive L&D strategy that is aligned with the organisation’s broader business objectives. I am responsible for conducting detailed learning needs and skill gap analyses, building competency frameworks, developing tailored programmes, including induction sessions, refresher courses, 'Lunch & Learn' initiatives, and the implementation of LMS and performance management systems. Additionally, I spearhead micro-learning initiatives and the Buddy Programme to foster continuous employee development.
How did your current role come about?
I began my career in complaints management at a multinational bank in the UAE, but my passion for training staff was quickly noticed. When an opportunity arose, I transitioned into a training manager role, focusing on retail banking staff. After a merger with an Islamic bank, I expanded my expertise in Islamic banking. Seeking broader experience, I then moved into a corporate bank in a product role to gain insights into corporate banking. Eventually, I returned to retail banking at a UAE-based local bank, where I took on business training responsibilities and was later absorbed into the HR department to oversee Learning & Development for the entire bank.
