Frequently asked questions
ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) is a professional membership organisation for Chartered Accountants. It offers the ACA qualification, a globally recognised accreditation for accounting and finance professionals. ICAEW supports members with training, ethical guidance, and career development, ensuring high standards in the profession.
Chartered Accountants are experts in financial management, auditing, taxation, corporate finance and business advisory services. They work across industries advising business, private and public sector organisations, government bodies and individuals on managing their finances effectively.
To become a Chartered Accountant in the UK, you need to:
Meet entry requirements: while many accountants hold a university degree, it’s not mandatory to becoming a Chartered Accountant. However, holding a degree or Masters in any subject may exempt you from some stages of professional exams. Accounting apprenticeships such as those run by AAT provide a route to achieving chartered status with the main professional bodies such as ACCA and ICAEW.
Complete a qualification: enrol on an accredited course provided by a professional body including: ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA.
Secure a training contract and gain practical experience with an approved employer.
Successfully complete all required exams for your chosen chartered body.
Gain typically three years of relevant work experience.
Apply for membership with your chartered body upon completion.
