Professional Levels of Membership

There are multiple levels of professional membership with the CIPD.

Chartered Companion – Chartered CCIPD

Can only be achieved by invitation from the CIPD and is awarded in recognition of a significant contribution to the profession.

Chartered Fellowship – Chartered FCIPD

A Chartered Fellow holds a strategic position and demonstrates the expertise to lead the key areas of HR. Using their professional skills, knowledge and experience, they determine, develop and implement HR strategies, plans and policies to promote and achieve organisational success.

How do I become a Chartered Fellow?
Study a Level 7 Advanced CIPD Qualification! The CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma provides the underpinning knowledge for CIPD professional membership (Associate, Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow). If you can demonstrate that you can meet the activities and behaviour requirements for Chartered membership you can apply to upgrade to Chartered Member or Fellow when you’ve successfully completed your CIPD Advanced diploma.

Upgrading to Chartered Fellow
If you’re a Graduate or Chartered Member and you can demonstrate how you meet the Chartered Fellow criteria, you can apply to upgrade to Chartered Fellow.

Chartered Membership – Chartered MCIPD

A Chartered Member demonstrates the expertise needed to plan and manage generalist or specialist HR operations. Combining their HR professional knowledge, skill and insights with an understanding of an organisation’s context and structure, they create and deliver integrated HR services and solutions that help drive their organisation.

How do I become a Chartered Member?
Achieving Chartered Membership is dependent on demonstrating that you have met the activities, knowledge and behaviours set out in the criteria. You can do this by studying a Level 7 Advanced CIPD Qualification and upgrading.

The CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma provides the underpinning knowledge for CIPD professional membership (Associate, Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow). If you can demonstrate that you can meet the activities and behaviour requirements for Chartered membership you can apply to upgrade to Chartered Member or Fellow when you’ve successfully completed your CIPD Advanced Diploma.

Associate Membership – Assoc. CIPD
An Associate member works in a role giving vital support to the key areas of HR (central HR, learning and development or another professional area of HR). They use their specialist HR skills and knowledge to support HR leaders and managers.

How do I become an Associate member?
By studying a CIPD Qualification and upgrading. Studying a CIPD qualification at Level 3 Foundation or Level 5 Associate will provide you with the knowledge required for the Associate professional level of membership. If you then have the relevant experience, you can apply to upgrade to Associate membership.
