The offer of flexible learning options plus tutor support convinced Jade Chandler that Reed Business School was the right choice to help her become CIPD qualified and she wasn’t disappointed. Now, having successfully achieved her CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma, the People and Culture Coordinator at Aston Villa Football Club is looking forward to taking her career to new heights.

Here Jade talks about her learning journey, the broader HR knowledge she has now acquired and looks ahead to a time when she might study for her CIPD Level 7.

What is your current role and how did it come about?

I started my HR career as a recruitment consultant after achieving a first-class degree in Business. I am now People and Culture Coordinator at Aston Villa, one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the premier league. My position came about because the business had rapidly grown over the past couple of years and the need for dedicated HR support in my department was essential. I play a key role in supporting the HR functions of the business. My responsibilities include recruitment and onboarding, offer management, employment contracts, whole employee lifecycle duties plus general HR administration and support.

How did you choose Reed Business School for your CIPD Level 5 Diploma in People Management?

I researched the organisation and found that Reed Business School was widely recognised in HR. I saw they provided flexible learning options which was important as at the time I wasn’t sure which delivery method I wanted to choose. I also have strong industry connections through the Reed Group. There was the added fact that they offer tutor support and practical applications for HR professionals which I thought would help me achieve my CIPD qualification.

Which studying route did you choose for your CIPD Level 5 Diploma?

I chose the workshop course which I thought was the best option for me as it would better suit my learning style. I enjoyed real-time interaction and hands on activities with the tutors and peers, making it easier to ask questions and get immediate feedback. It also provided networking opportunities as I was able to share experiences and build connections that could benefit my career.

I’m fairly new to my career and the group discussions allowed for different perspectives which was useful to learn and reflect from as well as build confidence.

The workshops allowed for a structured approach to learning as the workshop dates were spread out throughout the 18 months. This was beneficial as it helped me to monitor my deadlines and kept me on track compared to self-paced online learning.

How did you work with your tutor Lorraine Bartlett and was the support helpful?

Having Lorraine as my tutor was amazing, she was responsive, accessible and provided support throughout the whole process. She provided me with immediate feedback and guidance when I contacted her, making it easier to grasp challenging topics. She scheduled times for regular video calls on Teams to discuss assignments in detail when I received clear explanations of what was expected. This was more useful than being advised through emails or online forums and made me more proactive in completing my assignments.

Lorraine had vast industry experience meaning she provided practical insights beyond textbooks, using real life examples, sharing best practices and HR trends which was invaluable. Lorraine was very encouraging and made the learning process so much more engaging.

What did you think of the resources we provide?

The learning materials were very useful throughout the course. In particular, the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) provided 24/7 access to an extensive online library of quality reference materials, recorded webinars and study guides to help progress your assignments. This meant I could pick up my assignment wherever I was – at home, work, or travelling – therefore further enhancing the flexible learning experience and allowing me to study at my own pace, revisiting materials as and when required.

How did you find juggling work with studying?

Balancing working full time whilst studying can be challenging at times and self-discipline is key. My workplace was very supportive and allowed me to take two days a month for my studies which helped me set aside dedicated study hours. My manager was also very supportive throughout the process and offered guidance on subject areas. Some techniques which helped me were making sure I utilised all the available resources such as the webinars and recorded content to make my learning more time efficient. I also made sure to complete and prioritise one module at a time instead of juggling multiple assignment which enhanced my organisation and time management skills.

What new skills and knowledge have you developed to support your role?

Completing my CIPD Level 5 qualification has developed my HR understanding in several ways. I now appreciate how the people and culture function aligns with the overall objectives and strategies of the business. In particular, I understand how important it is to analyse HR metrics so that we can improve workplace initiatives and support a positive workplace culture.

Becoming CIPD qualified has increased my confidence especially in understanding HR policies, compliance and employment legislation. As a result, I am able to offer higher quality HR support and advice.

What do you think the CIPD qualification will add to your career?

Undertaking the CIPD qualification has helped me to increase my credibility and broaden my general HR knowledge. The course covered key HR areas like employee engagement, talent management, and employment law, which will make me more effective in my position. Hopefully, obtaining my Level 5 will advance my HR career and is a great foundation if I ever want to continue my studies and complete my CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma.

How important is it to be CIPD qualified in HR?

It is very important to be CIPD qualified. It’s beneficial for enhancing professional recognition, career prospects and increasing credibility as an HR professional. Additionally, it demonstrates commitment, professionalism and dedication to my career. Becoming CIPD qualified has enhanced my practical HR knowledge and skills and ensures I am keeping up with the latest HR trends and best practices.

What are your ultimate career aims?

Honest answer, I’m not 100% sure yet. I would like to study for my CIPD Level 7 so that I can move into more senior roles such as HR Manager, HR Business Partner or even Head of HR one day.
